Jonathon  Robran attended Marryatville High School, and played junior football with the Walkerville Football Club.

Known as "J.R or Jono", Robran played for Norwood's underage teams and made his league debut in the 1992 Foundation Cup pre-season series.

Despite being selected by Hawthorn at pick number 11 in the 1992 AFL National Draft, Robran initially chose to stay with the Redlegs.

Under league coach Neil Craig, Robran was named as a back-pocket in the Norwood side that was defeated by  Woodville/West Torrens in the 1993 Grand Final.

The mobile big man developed into a fine key defender, capable of also going forward or playing as a ruckman.

After eventually moving to Victoria, he made his debut for Hawthorn in 1995 and played ten games for the season. He went on to play 75 games for the Hawks over the next five years. However, despite playing 18 games in 1999, he was traded to Essendon at the end of that season. While he only played four games for the year, he was named as the emergency
for the Essendon team that won the 2000 AFL Grand Final against Melbourne. He made another four appearances in 2001, before he was delisted a second time.

Robran returned to the Parade for the 2002 season and finished high in the club's best and fairest award.

In 2003, he was a valuable member of the South Australian team which defeated Western Australia in Perth.

He played his 100th and final SANFL game in the last minor round of the 2004 season.

Jonathon is the son of North Adelaide champion Barrie Robran and the brother of Matthew Robran who played with Norwood, Hawthorn and the Adelaide Crows.
