Lester Ross (junior) joined Norwood via the Athelstone Football Club. Progressing through the Under 19 and Reserve grades, he made his senior debut in the 1983 Sterling Cup against Footscray (Western Bulldogs).

After playing mainly as a rover early in his career, Ross was moved to a back pocket in the second half of 1984. He quickly developed into a reliable and consistent defender. Possibly his finest performance was in Norwood's 1984 premiership victory against Port Adelaide when he produced a faultless display in the classic Grand Final.

In 1986 he was again high in the best players in a grand final, this time for the Reserves, as  the Redlegs easily accounted for Woodville.

Ross went on to achieve Norwood player life membership in 1992. He wore the same number 10 for the Redlegs as his father Lester senior had
between 1961 and 1962 (27 games). Younger  brother Jonathon also played senior football for Norwood (1991-1996, 53 games).

Ross retired from SANFL football at a relatively young age and accepted a country coaching appointment with Padthaway in 1993 at the age of 29. Playing in the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football League, he led the team to a flag in his first season. The club was undefeated for the year, and Ross was best on ground in the Grand Final.

He also coached the Athelstone Football Club, in the South Australian Amateur Football League, between 2002 and 2004.
