Phil Saunders exhibited an all-round, sporting ability. After leaving St Peters College, he gained a fine reputation in Amateur League as a centre half forward for Old Collegians.

He excelled in cricket as a middle order batsman and fast bowler, initially for East Torrens, before transferring to Kensington.

His football career was put on hold in 1951-52 when he travelled to England and played cricket for Leicestshire.

In 1953, Saunders returned to Adelaide with an English fiancée and, as a 25 year old, took part in Norwood’s pre-season trials.

At 6ft 1ins (185cm) and weighing 12st 9lbs (80kg), Phil was tried in the ruck and as such was included in the league training squad.

While playing a number of games in the Association (Reserves) side, Saunders proved a reliable back-up when regulars like Marriott and Walker were unavailable.
