From Karoonda, near Murray Bridge, Wayne Schmaal proved to be a great Norwood clubman. Progressing through Norwood's Under 17's, the solidly built defender was a consistent performer despite several injury setbacks. He played his first Reserves game in 1976, and over the next 12 seasons, went on to make almost 100 appearances at that level.

Schmaal made his League debut in 1980, playing 10 senior games for the year. He spent 1981 in the Reserves, playing 21 games.

1982 proved to be a most memorable year however. The rugged back pocket player, with a tough approach on the player and the ball, got his opportunity in the League team after an injury to Greg Nicholson.

Schmaal was an important contributor to the 1982 premiership team, which easily accounted for Glenelg in the Grand Final.

He dislocated his right shoulder late in the 1983 season and missed the remainder of the year.

Schmaal returned from that major shoulder injury in the middle of the 1984 season. He struggled to regain his League spot however and played only one senior game in 1985. He decided to retire in August of that year, after being dropped from the Reserves in Round 20.

He returned and played some Reserves football in 1987.
