David Shillabeer came from Port Augusta in 1965, having already played in a premiership for South Augusta in the Spencer Gulf League the previous season. He then played for Norwood's Thirds in its 1965 premiership win.

A natural left-footed half forward flanker, he was promoted to the Seconds and made his League debut mid-season 1966, playing brilliantly in the last seven rounds.

In 1967, a cartilage operation ruined  his season and he played only three League games. He struggled to recapture his form in 1968.

In 1969 he was a member of the Reserves Grand Final team that defeated Port Adelaide on the Adelaide Oval. The following year he kicked four goals in the Redlegs' Reserves Grand Final win over North Adelaide.
