In 1948 he played Reserves for Norwood, joining a touring party that travelled to the South-East at season's end, and played against a team representing the Mount Gambier Football Association.

He made his League debut in 1949 as a late replacement for Keith Le Page who had contracted mumps; Slade had been captaining Magill Royals at the time. A few weeks later, he played in Norwood's Preliminary Final loss to West Torrens.

Slade played 11 League games between 1949 and 1952 as a utility and after playing five seasons of Reserves football he was awarded Life Membership of the Norwood B's (Reserves)

On leaving Norwood he joined Payneham for the next six seasons and was subsequently appointed captain and then coach of the club. In 1957 and 1958 he gained selection in the State Amateur League team, representing South Australia in the 1958 National Carnival in Melbourne.

Robert Slade also coached Port Noarlunga for three seasons in the Southern Football Association, before returning to Norwood to coach the Thirds where he had great success winning premierships in 1963 and 1965. In 1967 he also coached Norwood's Reserves.
