Bill Slattery represented Norwood in three successive premiership years, culminating in the SA Football Association's first grand final, in 1889, when 'the Reds' defeated Port Adelaide 7.4 to 5.9 after an epic struggle.

Bill was a member of the Norwood team which claimed the Championship of Australia by defeating South Melbourne at  Kensington Oval in 1888.

He also played in the Norwood team which defeated Great Britain, 5.8 to 3.1, before 8,000 spectators at Adelaide Oval on the 14th July 1888, kicking a goal just before half-time to put the home team five points ahead.

Slattery (1865-1956) was the seventh child of Nicholas Slattery and his wife  Mary (nee Maher). Their second child, Ellen, married John Baker and  the eldest son of that couple,  William Baker (1878-1965), played for North Adelaide in the early 1900s

Bill Slattery married Mary Anne Cassidy in 1890. She died in 1893 and Bill married Mary Anne Flannagan in 1906. Their son Stanley was born in 1897 and the family moved to Perth. Bill died in Perth in 1956 and Stanley died in 1964
