Born in Manchester, England Gary Smallridge played rugby as a junior. He made his league debut playing for East Fremantle Football Club (West Australian Football League) in 1990. Smallridge played 22 games for East Fremantle in his first season and took out the club's best and fairest award.

He then decided to join Port Adelaide in the SANFL and made 37 senior appearances for the Magpies from 1991 to 1992. He won Port's Most Dedicated Player trophy in 1991.

He not only represented South Australia against Western Australia at Subiaco Oval in 1991, but he also played for Western Australia against South Australia in 1990.

Having only made nine league appearances in the 1992 minor round season, Smallridge moved to the Parade.

Under Norwood coach Neil Craig, the rugged midfielder played 20 games in 1993, but just nine in 1995.

Smallridge was high in the Norwood Reserves best players list, as the Redlegs easily accounted for South Adelaide in the 1995 Reserves Grand Final.
