The younger brother of Doug Smart (29 NFC Games, 1990-1992), Sam Smart played in Norwood's 1991 Under 17 premiership team. In the same season he also captained the Prince Alfred College First 18 and was a member of the South Australian Teal Cup squad.

He was impressive in the Reserves in 1992, playing as a ruckman/key forward and making his League debut in the second half of the year. Smart only played two League games for the season, but was named vice-captain of the SA Teal Cup team, and won the Reserves best and fairest award.

A medical student at the time, he was selected by the Adelaide Crows in the 1992 AFL National Draft.

In 1993, Smart was a regular player in the League side coached by Neil Craig. He made 20 senior appearances for the year and was named at centre-half forward in the Redlegs team that was defeated by Woodville-West Torrens in the Grand Final at Football Park. He remained on the Adelaide Crows playing list.

The following year he only made nine senior appearances, spending most of the season in the Reserves. He had a more consistent season in 1995, although he still spent time in the Reserves. Smart received a meritorious award for his efforts in the team's premiership winning year.

He reached his 50 League game milestone in 1996 and also played his 50th Reserves game in the same year. Smart was runner-up in the Reserves best and fairest award.

Carlton selected him at pick 38 in the 1996 AFL National Draft and he made his AFL debut late in the 1997 season. That was to be his only AFL game and he was delisted at the end of the 1998.

Smart did play good Reserves football in his time with Carlton however, and he was a member of the team that won the 1997 (Ansett Cup) night pre-season premiership.
