Roy Stratfold was educated at Adelaide Boys High School and came through Norwood's junior ranks, playing as a wingman/centreman.

In 1956, he was awarded the senior colts "consistent play" trophy. The following year he captained the side, and won the "brilliant play" award.

Stratfold played Reserves for Norwood in 1958, and was in the team's best players in the grand final loss to Port Adelaide. At the end of the season, he played for Norwood against Footscray (VFL) under lights, on the Norwood Oval.

He made his League debut in round 15, 1959 at the Parade, under inspirational coach Alan Killigrew. Norwood lost a nail biter, 8.8 to Port Adelaide 7.17.

Stratfold was also a fine cricketer. A stalwart of the East Torrens Cricket Club, he gave approximately 20 years of sterling service to its A Grade team. He was a prolific wicket-taker with his right arm medium-fast bowling.
