Thomas Syer was a courageous and tireless rover who played most of his football for Norwood in the Reserves.

He injured an ankle late in the 1937 Reserves season, and missed Norwood's victories in the Second Semi-Final and Grand Final.

The following year the diminutive Syer continued to show good form in the Reserves, and was rewarded with his first league game in round 10. He was named as a second rover against North Adelaide, changing in a forward pocket. Unfortunately, he sustained a knee injury during the game.

The next week he was selected in the senior team that travelled to Port Pirie to meet a combined local side, but did not take the field. He was not selected in the league side for the rest of 1938 and injured a knee in the Reserves semi-final against West Torrens, on the 3rd September 1938 - he missed the Reserves Grand Final win.

Syer had a knee operation before the start of the 1939 season and resumed his career in the East Torrens Association before returning to the Norwood Reserves.

He continued to shine at Reserves level, and was selected for his second, and final league game for Norwood in round 4, 1941 - he was named as second rover resting out of a forward pocket. The following week he was selected as one of the reserves for the league team.

Thomas Francis Syer served in World War II
