From Jervois, Wayne Tanner was a strong and skilful wingman/half-back but unfortunately, his career was to be severely hampered by injuries.

Tanner played 11 matches for the under 17's in their 1982 premiership year.

In 1983 he progressed to the under 19's, making 20 appearances and playing in Norwood's Grand Final victory against Sturt : 24.17 to 11.17.

Tanner made his league debut in round 17 of 1985 - Norwood defeating West Torrens 27.11 to 18.17. He played four senior games and 16 in the Reserves - including the Grand Final victory against Woodville.

In 1986, Tanner played 20 senior games for the Redlegs and at the end of the season was selected by Collingwood with pick number 60 in the VFL draft. His decision to remain in the SANFL was in partly influenced by work opportunity and a nagging back injury. Tanner only played 13 senior matches in 1987, and six in 1988.

He had better luck with injuries in 1989 and was able to play 17 league matches, reach his 50 game milestone, and was the recipient of a Five Years Service medallion.

The following season he was restricted to just 11 appearances in the reserves.

Tanner's last season with the Redlegs was in 1991 when he played 14 games and was recognised with a "Meritorious Performance" award - he also played his 50th reserves match.

His younger brother, Grant played 66 NFC games (1989-1993)
