Having come through Norwood's junior ranks, George Townsend was chosen to play in a pre-season trial against Portland Imperials in April, 1906. He made an immediate impact as reported in The Advertiser 30 April 1906 “Of the new men Townsend on the centre left wing was by far the best. He was smart in picking up the ball, shepherded splendidly and indeed every one of his admirable tactics showed that his head ruled his work.”

Consequently, George was chosen in the league side for round one of the 1906 season on 12 May 1906 against North. He was in the best players and the Quiz 14 May 1906 described him as,” A left footer and very fast.” Townsend played in the next nine games when something occurred which disrupted his league career.

After round 10, Norwood undertook a trip to Victoria. George was unable to take part. The trip was very successful with Norwood defeating Essendon, Fitzroy and Ballarat. On their return Townsend found that he had lost his regular spot to the wingmen who undertook the trip.
He was unable to re-establish himself in the senior side and played only five more league games; two in 1907 and three in 1908. His final game was against West Adelaide on July 18th, 1908.

Whilst playing for Norwood seconds, George did manage to play in a grand final. At this time Norwood seconds played in the Adelaide and Suburban Association. In October, 1907 they played the Grand Final against Portland Imperials at the Thebarton Racecourse. Unfortunately they lost but George Townsend was again named in the best players.
