Doug Tugwell and his brother Lloyd were both born and lived their life in Victor Harbor and because of their sporting achievements were considered sporting legends in that town. A country town with brothers both playing for Norwood.
Although only a short time at Norwood Doug played in the Norwood Colts Premiership team of 1940 and then achieved the ultimate the following year of being a League Premiership player in the 1941 League team. His League career was interrupted by war service.
Doug started playing football for Victor Harbor in 1936 at the age of 14 and was third in the Mail Medal in 1939, before heading off to Norwood in 1940 where he was a member of the Norwood Colts Premiership team for that year.
In 1941 he was a member of the Norwood League Premiership team.
World War 2 intervened and he did his service in the navy for four years, returning to Norwood and then transferring to Glenelg for a few games in 1948.
He returned to Victor Harbor to be Captain of the local Victor team, coached by his brother Lloyd. This was the beginning of an outstanding record with the Victor Harbor Football Club, in an era when Victors dominated the competition

Encounter Bay Football Club
Doug joined the Encounter Bay Football Club in 1963 and coached the Colts team to their first Premiership, a feat he repeated the following year in 1964. In 1964 he was also appointed A Grade and B Grade coach and the senior side finished third
In 1965 he took A Grade Premiers and B Grade Runners up, 1966 B Grade Premiers and A Grade Runners up.
1967 A Grade Premiers. An outstanding effort in a short time.
Doug was also a very good A Grade Cricketer an excelled in batting and bowling. He played for Victor Harbor and Encounter Bay and coached many junior teams
