Samuel James Temby played for Maylands in the Adelaide and Suburban Football Association in 1889 and at the start of the 1890 season.

Having shown promise with Maylands, he was selected by Norwood to make his senior debut against Medindie on 16th August, 1890. He kept his place in the side for the following matches against South Adelaide and Port Adelaide. At the end of the season, he was named for Norwood's game against the touring South Melbourne team on the Adelaide Oval.

Temby's form improved in 1891 and he was selected in the Norwood team that toured Victoria and Tasmania in late May - early June. He played in matches against South Ballarat, Carlton, and both of the encounters against Southern Tasmania. In August of the same year he was named in the back pocket for Norwood's clash against Fitzroy on the Adelaide Oval.

In 1892 he was granted a permit to play for North Melbourne in the Victorian Football Association.

A brushmaker and prominent cricketer, he was elected captain of the Kapunda Football Club (Barossa and Light Football Association) in 1896.

Unfortunately, Temby passed away in tragic circumstances at Kapunda on the 1st September, 1896
