Joseph Ulseth was recruited from Port Pirie in 1945 after serving with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) during the war. Before the war he had played for St.Marks/Ports Football Club and was part of their premiership teams in 1937 and 1939.

In 1938, playing at half forward, Ulseth had helped Port Pirie defeat Norwood in a 1938 mid-season fixture (13.13 to 9.9). He would have further impressed Norwood officials on the same weekend, winning a long kicking competition which included Norwood captain Tom Woodroofe and legendary full forward Bruce Schultz.

A strong, determined and hard working utility, he was named in Norwood's first ruck for his SANFL League debut against Port Adelaide. Perhaps the best performance in his short stay at Norwood was his six goal haul against West Torrens on the Norwood Oval.

Ulseth's last League appearance was in Norwood's Preliminary Final loss to West Torrens.

He was in Norwood's end of season touring party that travelled to Broken Hill, and beat a combined side 10.11 to 8.9.

The following year he returned to Port Pirie and joined Proprietary Football Club.
