Originally from Rostrevor College, Peter Vivian started with the Norwood Colts in 1952. By the following season he had made his league debut and went on to play almost his entire career as a rover and forward pocket.

Extremely dangerous near goals, he topped the club's goal-kicking on three occasions.

In 1954 he was suspended for striking  Port Adelaide's Fos Williams in a SANFL league match in Port Pirie.

1955 saw him named best on ground for the State's Second Eighteen against Broken Hill. In the same season he was concussed after running into the infamous western stand wall at Norwood.

A clean mark and  good kick, Vivian represented South Australia against Victoria (V.F.A)  in 1957.

Appointed captain under coach Alan Killigrew in 1959, he continued to wear his number 8 long-sleeved jumper almost exclusively throughout his league career.

He played in the 1955, 1957, and 1960 Grand Finals.
