James Wasley grew up in Tea Tree Gully and played his early football for his local club. He played six games for the Norwood under 17 team in 1994 and 21 in 1995 when he was runner-up in the best and fairest. Wasley progressed to the reserves, playing 16 games in 1996. He represented South Australia at under 18 level in 1996/1997.

Wasley made his league debut in the opening round of 1997 and played eight senior games and nine reserves in Norwood's league premiership year. "Wazza" made a big impression in his first season, and his blistering speed soon earned him another nickname - "Flying Machine".

At the end of the 1997 season he was selected by Collingwood in the AFL National Draft. He struggled early at his new club with stress fractures of his foot, but was able to make his AFL debut in the second half of the season. Wasley played five matches in his first year of AFL.

His pace allowed him to be considered as a wingman/half-forward/half-back but a knee injury early in the 1999 season slowed his development,

Although the following season began well for Wasley, he was soon hampered by a shoulder injury and eventually struggled with form.

Wasley was then forced to miss a big portion of 2001 with ankle trouble and was delisted at the end of the season after 23 AFL games.

He returned to the Redlegs in 2002, and played another seven league games
