Ron Williams commenced in the Junior Colts in 1939, then moved to the Senior Colts in 1940 and captained the side in 1941. War service limited his appearances for the Norwood-North combination in the wartime competition from 1942 to 1944.

Williams played in Norwood's Premiership win of 1946 when he was named in the forward Pocket/second ruck.

Working as a postman in the St. Peter's area, he cycled an average of 25 miles a day.

1948 saw him play in another flag for the Redlegs, this time as a centre half-forward. The sturdy, left-footed forward, was a brilliant mark, reliable long kick, and had the ability to read the play and make good positioning.

Illness saw him miss the club's 1950 Grand Final win against Glenelg.

Williams then played in the Upper Murray Football Association in 1951 and 1952. As captain-coach of Renmark, he was runner-up for the 1951 Association Medal. Earlier that season he represented the Association against Tatiara on Adelaide Oval. The following season he played for the Association against the SANFL Reserves State side.

He returned to play for Norwood in the 1952 first semi-final against West Torrens and went on to play in the Grand Final against North Adelaide.
