Educated at Christian Brothers College in Adelaide, John Wright was a strong, close checking defender. Progressing through Norwood's junior grades, he captained the 1967 Colts team. Wright won the team's best and fairest award, and was included in the combined Colts team which played the Spencer Gulf Colts in Whyalla.

He played his first Reserves game in 1970 when he was named on a half back flank in the Norwood team which defeated North Adelaide in the 1970 Reserves Grand Final on the Adelaide Oval.

In 1971 Wright had an impressive start to the season, playing at centre half back for the Reserves. It came as no surprise when he was selected to make his senior debut against Central District in round nine. Norwood narrowly lost the match to the Bulldogs : 14.11 to 15.12.   Playing mainly out of a back pocket, he kept his spot in the League team for the remainder of the season.

The rugged defender with a fine mark, sustained a knee injury in 1972, which required an operation.

While he returned from the setback, and continued to play fine football in the Reserves, Wright was not able to break into the League side again.
