Born in Amsterdam, Jonathan Yerbury moved to Australia with his family when he was two years old. He spent his early years growing up in Sydney, before moving to Adelaide at the age of 15.

Educated at St Peters College, he progressed through the Norwood juniors, and made his League debut in the opening round of the 1997 season; Norwood defeating North Adelaide, on the Prospect Oval, 17.12 to 7.7.

Although Yerbury was named in Port Power's original AFL squad in 1997, he did not end up playing an AFL game.

In 1998, he played in the Norwood Reserves Premiership side.

In 2000, he was listed as a rookie for the Adelaide Crows. Sadly however, he had the misfortune of seriously damaging his knee playing for the Redlegs in a pre-season game against Northern Territory in Darwin.

Playing predominantly as a ruckman, the athletic and mobile big man had his best season in 2002.

Yerbury had more than his fair share of injuries. In his eight years of senior football, he suffered a broken wrist, a dislocated ankle, a serious knee injury and torn hamstrings.
