Des Hoffman came through Norwood's junior grades, playing as a ruckman in the Junior Colts of 1953, and the Senior Colts of 1954.
In 1955, playing as a half forward, he made three League appearances in his debut season, and was named Best Utility for the Reserves.
The following year, Hoffman was selected at centre half forward in Norwood's Advertiser Cup Grand Final win, over South Adelaide. He kicked three goals, and was then selected in the team that defeated Carlton in the Challenge Final, the following week.
1957 was Hoffman's best season for the Redlegs. He made 17 League appearances, predominantly as a ruck-rover changing in the back pocket, and was a member of the 1957 Grand Final team.
Although he played his last League game in the following year's First Semi-Final, he was later named in the squad that triumphed in the Advertiser Cup Final and in the team that subsequently met Geelong in the Challenge Final.
