John Wiesner attended Adelaide Boys High School before joining Norwood and playing for the Reserves in 1957. He made his League debut in Round 3, 1957. A good mark, he was regarded as a safe defender, who was more reliable than flashy.
Playing at centre half back, he was a key member of Norwood's eight point win over Port Adelaide in the 1960 Reserves Grand Final.
Wiesner played predominantly as a key defender and was awarded a Player's Five Year Certificate after the 1961 season.
He stood out of football for the 1962 season because of studies.
In 1964 Wiesner was named the most effective player for the Norwood Reserves, and the following season was was elected captain of the team.
