Recruited from Payneham/Norwood Union in the Adelaide Footy League, Sam Barnett played 14 games for the Norwood reserves in 2019. He was a member of that year's reserves premiership team and led the goal-kicking for the season with 23 majors.

In 2020, Barnett played 13 games for the reserves and kicked 16 goals - again leading the reserves goal-kicking.

He made his league debut in the last minor round game of the year.

The following season he made six appearances for the reserves before returning to Payneham/Norwood Union.
