Brian Burke was a ruckman/follower in the powerful Norwood team that won the 1946, 1948 and 1950 premierships. At the peak of his career he was one of the State’s outstanding followers, possessing speed and stamina as second ruck supporting Dalwood, or resting in the back pocket.  He played seven state games and was the star of the 1948 preliminary final win against a tough West Adelaide, where his stamina was pivotal in getting Norwood into the Grand Final.

Brian commenced league football with Norwood-North in 1942 as a sixteen year old from Norwood High School. On leaving school he played with Norwood Colts, but returned to the combined side in 1944. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 and played for Norwood until 1952, retiring because of cartilage injuries to his knees that had forced him to miss the entire previous season.
