Joel Coombes was recruited by Norwood from VFL side Box Hill Hawks in 2008. He had also played in the Under 18 TAC Cup with the Sandringham Dragons.

A skilful wingman/half forward, he was a good mark for his size and came to The Parade highly rated.

Coombes made his league debut in the first round, 2008 and played four senior games in his first season.

While he failed to cement a spot in the league team, he was a solid performer in the reserves.

His final senior game was in the loss to Sturt in the 2008 knockout semi-final.

After a handful of appearances for the reserves early in 2009, Coombes and Norwood parted ways.

He went on to have stints at several other clubs/leagues including Glenelg, the Ovens and Murray Football League and the Essendon District Football League.
