Des Flavel joined Norwood in 1968, having attended King's College on a scholarship. Originally from Lucindale in the South East, Flavel was a strongly built, tenacious rover and back pocket player.

He was named in a forward pocket in Norwood Reserves' Grand Final win over North Adelaide in 1970.

A transfer in employment to Port Pirie saw him miss the early part of the 1971 season.

His last League game was the first semi final against Central District on the Adelaide Oval in 1972.
