Arthur "Art" Alexander Gilchrist came to Norwood via the Rose Park Football Club. In 1898 and 1899 he represented Rose Park in the East Torrens Football Association.
Gilchrist made his League debut for Norwood on the Adelaide Oval, during the 1899 season - Norwood defeating South Adelaide 6.5 to 3.5.
He returned to Rose Park in 1900 and played in the Adelaide and Suburban Football Association.
In 1901 he was a member of the Norwood premiership side which defeated Port Adelaide in a thrilling Grand Final : 4.9 to 4.5.
After moving to Victoria, Gilchrist was granted a permit from Norwood to play with the Melbourne Football Club. In Round 5, he made his senior debut against Fitzroy on the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Two weeks later, Gilchrist played his second and final senior game against Geelong.
