John Green attended Norwood High School and was recruited by Norwood from Salisbury after he had moved there for work.
 
Green impressed in the 1957 pre-season internal trials and he subsequently made his League debut in the opening round of that season. He was selected on a wing and Norwood defeated Sturt  11.9 to 10.8.
 
He kept his spot in the side the following week for the clash against West Adelaide at the Norwood Oval: Norwood 12.16 to West Adelaide 8.18.

Green played his last senior game in round three, against Port Adelaide.
 
A talented sportsman, he also played A Grade for the East Torrens Cricket Club
