BIO

Jack Hall was a versatile sportsman who nevertheless was perhaps a tad fortunate to chalk up a league game with Norwood in 1910. He and George Gwynne were late additions to the team after key men Bruce Townsend, ‘Dick’ Stoddart and William Crowe dropped out.  Norwood at home was a warm favourite, but West Adelaide surged to a 5.17 to 3.5 victory.  Jack returned to the Norwood II side, where he was a premiership player that year.

Born on 3 March 1891 to Edward and Ada (Chapman) Hall, of Beulah Road, Norwood, Jack had six brothers and three sisters. Between 1906 and 1909 he attended Roseworthy Agricultural College, where he was active in football, athletics and cricket.  He was a member of the college team which won the 1908-09 premiership in the Gawler Cricketing Association.

Jack dallied with tennis, but cricket was his main game.  An allrounder, he played in a Colts team against Victoria, represented West Torrens in A grade and was captain of a Commonwealth Railways premiership team in the Port Augusta competition.

After World War I he played with North Adelaide and was club secretary.  He switched to Glenelg in 1921-22 and was the A grade captain in 1929-30.  A smart fieldsman, he usually finished a season with a batting average in the 30s and about 20 wickets to his credit.  His best bowling performance was 7/58 against Kensington in the 1928-29 season.

Jack married Hellena McGuire at Largs Bay in 1913 and they had children Gordon, Condon and Josephine. Jack was a business manager and lived at Glenelg.  He died on 15 July 1958 and is buried at Centennial Park.
