David Hawes played in an era when the Norwood juniors were dominant in the under 17 and under 19 competitions. In 1983 he played eight games for the under 17 side that went top at the end of the season.
The following year he played 21 games for the under 17s. The team went through the minor round undefeated, then drew the grand final, before winning the replay by 44 points.
Hawes was also in the 1984 State Teal Cup squad which competed in the under 17 national carnival in Sydney.
In 1985 he made 10 appearances in the Reserves and 11 in the under 19s with both grades winning premierships.
Similarly in 1986, Hawes played Reserves (14 games) and under19s (eight games). Both grades again won flags, with the under 19s going through undefeated.
Hawes made his senior debut in 1987, playing three matches in the pre-season Escort Cup series. He played the rest of the year for the Reserves
