Russell Haythorpe joined Norwood after attending a tryout day in November 2002. He was subsequently invited to complete the pre-season with the Redlegs and made his senior debut for Norwood against Woodville-West Torrens mid-way through the 2003 season. He had previously played four league games for North Adelaide in 1996.
Haythorpe was recruited as a strong, inside mid-fielder.
After playing six league matches in his first season at the Parade, he added another nine in 2004.
Haythorpe also had stints with Salisbury North, Kilburn and Gaza football clubs in the South Australian Amateur Football League, representing the State in 1999 and 2000, and making the Amateur League Team of the Year in 1998 and 2005.
