John Hegarty made his league debut as a half-forward flanker in Round 3, 1945 when Norwood were defeated by Port Adelaide.
 
The following week Hegarty was selected on a wing in Norwood's victory against West Adelaide : 8.16 to 7.15.
 
Hegarty was named as one of the Reserves for Norwood's home game against Glenelg, in Round 5, but was not selected in the final line-up.
 
He was named reserve on several other occasions but unfortunately did not play league football again
