Although several newspaper reports indicate that George Ross Halbert played for Norwood in 1898, there remains some doubt about whether or not he did play a senior game for the club
A report in The Express and Telegraph 21 May 1898 p 7 notes that a permit to change clubs from West Torrens to Norwood had been granted to G R Halbert.
An obituary The News 31 October 1951 p 22 for “George Halbert West Torrens oldest life member” noted that “…Mr Halbert played for eight seasons as a ruckman before going to Norwood for a season. He then returned to Torrens”
George’s grandson John Halbert is a Sturt legend, winner of the 1961 Magarey Medal and a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
