BIO
William Charles Jewell played two games for Norwood in June 1903 and his name does not appear in any reports of club games before or after that date.
After his debut game on 13 June 1903, it was noted that “Jewell was an old Ballarat player… he knows the points of the game and only a few matches will be required to get him into his stride” (Critic 20 June 1903, p15)
It is highly likely that he was the prominent Ballarat cyclist W C Jewell who featured in track and road races around Victoria from the 1890s and later appeared in races in Adelaide and country South Australia from the early 1900s.
The only record linking W C Jewell the cyclist and football occurred on 11 July 1903 when he was selected for the Atlas Tire Company against the Dunlop Tire Company in the annual cycle traders football match held on the Unley Oval. Dunlop won by four points. (Express & Telegraph 11 July 1903, p3)
Judging by newspaper reports it appears that W C Jewell did not pull on the football boots again, but continued as a competitor and later an administrator in cycling events throughout South Australia and Victoria.
