Kilmartin played football and cricket in Strathalbyn prior to 1902 and resumed playing there the following year.

Thomas Kilmartin was born on 24 October 1877 in Strathalbyn. His parents were Michael and Catherine (nee Enright) and he had seven siblings, John, Daniel, Austin, Bridget, Ann, Annie and Michael.  He married Mabel Power on 12 December 1921 and died at Glenelg on 21 May 1953 age 75
