Born in Port Lincoln, Donald James Lawrence played his early football for the Wayback Football Club in the Port Lincoln Football Association. He later joined the South Australian police force and was stationed at the Thebarton Barracks.
Lawrence transferred from Port Adelaide to Norwood in 1945 and his clearance was approved on April 14
He made his debut in round 12 of that year as a half forward flanker against Glenelg. Norwood won the match : 6.22 to 5.13.
He played four league games in his first season, and was named 19th man on two occasions.
The following season Lawrence played another two senior games.
A capable follower, he was used at either end of the ground when "resting" or when replacing a player during the game.
In 1947 Lawrence only played for the reserves and he rejoined the Waybacks FC in 1948 where captained them to a premiership
