John Lyall was the son of Rev James Lyall, who served for 40 years as minister of the Flinders Street Presbyterian Church.

John was employed by the Bank of South Australia, and also by the Commercial Bank of South Australia. He left the banking industry in 1886 when he was accused of embezzlement, although he was found not guilty at his subsequent criminal trial.

He moved to Western Australia in the 1890’s, and  later became the manager of several timber mills in the South West region.
