Richard Manning played for the Redlegs in the years around World War 1. He was brother to Joseph who also played for Norwood. They were among a number of young Norwood men whose lives and football careers were affected by their service in the war.
Richard played his first game as a ruck follower for Norwood in June 1915 and enlisted for service in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in February 1916. He served in France from 1916 and was “lightly” wounded in September 1918, returning to Australia in February 1919. He recommenced playing for Norwood in season 1919 and played his last senior game in June of that year.
Richard died in 1936 at the age of 40.
