James Merrigan progressed from Norwood's second twenty and made his senior debut for the club at the start of the 1892 season.

His first game was against Adelaide on the Adelaide Oval on 14 May 1892, won by Norwood 15.16 to 1.2.

The following week he was named at centre half back against Port Adelaide on the Kensington Oval. Final scores: Norwood 8.7 to Port Adelaide 9.5.

Norwood won the following two games against Medindie and Merrigan was named in the second match played at the Kensington Oval on 11 June 1892; final scores Norwood 13.13 to Medindie 2.4

He is not mentioned in reports of the earlier game against game but may have played.
