BIO

Gilbert Mincherton was born in Northam, Western Australia on 16 February 1919 and played his early football for the Cadoux Club in the wheatbelt region, north of Perth.

After joining the Royal Australian Airforce in 1939 Mincherton was stationed  at Edinburgh Airfield in Adelaide and played football for the local airforce side. He was discharged in December 1945 which allowed him to play the 1946 season with the Norwood Football Club where he played one league game (one goal) and 14 Reserves games (eight goals). He was also named as vice captain of the Reserves.

He recalled that in his one league game he marked the ball at half forward and the captain, Jack Oatey, beckoned for a pass, but Gilbert, seizing the opportunity, turned around and kicked the goal himself.

In 1948 Mincherton returned to Western Australia and resumed playing with Cadoux, together with his four brothers, in a team that won eight premierships and were undefeated for six years.

Gilbert Mincherton died in Western Australia on 12 December 2014
