BIO

Laurence McCard was born in 1901 and joined Norwood in April 1920 after receiving a clearance from West Adelaide where he had played at least one league game on the 12th May 1919 against Norwood at Adelaide Oval.

He is listed as player number 288 by West Adelaide  and apart from his debut game with the club he played a number of B grade games in 1919.

It is not known why McCard transferred to Norwood but he did play in the B team as a backman for most of the year and was frequently mentioned among the best players including a semi-final against Sturt at Glenelg Oval on the 4th September 1920, won by Sturt 10.8 to 8.4

McCard was promoted to the league side for the Grand Final against minor premiers North Adelaide on the 18th September 1920 after Norwood had defeated Port Adelaide in a semi-final. North ran out easy winners by 48 points.

In 1921 he was listed for the Norwood B team in a game against South Adelaide on 2 July but this is the only newspaper reference until he reappears in 1923 at West Adelaide in a B grade game. From 1924 to 1926 his name appears sporadically in West Adelaide’s A and B team lists.

His association with West Adelaide appears to have continued at least to 1932 when he assisted in the formation of a new junior club at Camden to act a feeder club for West Adelaide and Glenelg.

Laurence McCard died in Fremantle, WA in 1979.
