Edward McDonnell was selected by St. Kilda in the second round of the AFL Rookie Draft, held at the end of the 2004 season. He had represented Queensland in the Under 18 National Championships earlier in the year.
 
After spending the next two years on St. Kilda's rookie list without playing a league game, he was delisted,and transferred to Norwood in 2007.
 
An elite distance runner, capable of playing in a variety of key positions, his career at the Parade was unfortunately hampered by injuries - he played only 3 games in his first season.
 
Ed McDonnell returned to the Queensland AFL State League in 2009, and rejoined the Western Magpies.
