Frank Renfrey was born at Maylands and educated at the Norwood and Wellington Road schools. Whilst he did not play football at school, Renfrey later joined the Gaza Football Club in the North Adelaide District Association. He then played three seasons for Newstead in the East Torrens Association, impressing as a follower/centre half-back.
After playing consistently in the ruck for the Norwood B team, Renfrey made his League debut in Round 5, 1927 at the age of 21. He played 12 games in his first year and was named the club's best junior.
Renfrey was runner-up in the 1927 Reserves Best and Fairest award. The team finished minor Premiers, but was beaten by West Torrens in the final.
He was selected in the 1928 Norwood League training squad of 25 players, but only made three appearances for the season.
