Peter Ryan was recruited by Norwood from the Melbourne Football Club Reserves. Whilst he had not played in a VFL game, Ryan had been a member of  the Melbourne team that defeated Geelong in the semi-final of the 1987 Night Series.
 
A full back/half back, Ryan made just three appearances for Norwood in the 1988 Escort Cup (pre-season series), spending the remainder of the year in the SANFL Reserves competition.
 
In June 1988, Ryan had been given permission to train with Woodville.
