In 1885 Sampson impressed as a junior with the Medindie club. He joined Norwood in 1886 and made an impact from the start.
Sampson played against Adelaide on May 1, 1886. Norwood were victors and Sampson showed some good signs on debut.
The following week he kicked two goals in Norwood's win against Port Adelaide.
On June 21, Sampson played well as a wingman in another Norwood victory over Port.
He was noticeable on the wing in the loss against Geelong on July 10. Played on the Adelaide Oval, Norwood were beaten 3.12 to 5.16.
Sampson was named in the best players in Norwood's win over Adelaide on July 31, and continued his good form against South Adelaide a week later.
In what was virtually a premiership decider, Sampson was one of Norwood's better contributors in its loss to Adelaide on August 21.
After such a solid debut season, much was expected of Sampson in 1887. However, he was missing from the Norwood ranks and was rumoured to be joining Fitzroy in Victoria.
