Jon Sampson was part of Norwood's 1983 an 1984 Under 17's premierships; the powerful 1984 squad going through the entire season undefeated.
In 1984, he also represented South Australia in the Under 17's Teal Cup competition held in Sydney.
Sampson then played in the 1985 U/19's premiership - Norwood trouncing Port Adelaide 35.10 to 17.9 in the Grand Final.
He won the reserves best and fairest award in 1986, playing 14 games in that grade and seven at Under 19's level, in a year which saw both teams win flags and the 19's go through the season undefeated.
Versatile and athletic, Sampson made his league debut against Central District, in Round 8, 1987. The Redlegs won the match convincingly: 21.8 to 12.17. He went on to play 11 league games for the year.
