Ken Sawatzke had already played League football for Sturt in 1932, before he arrived at Norwood. A strong mark, he played as a ruckman/centre half forward, and had been a member of Sturt's 1932 premiership team.
 
Somewhat surprisingly, he then decided to switch to Norwood. At the start of the 1933 season, Sawatzke had lived in the Norwood area long enough for him to qualify to play for the Redlegs. He made his senior debut for Norwood in the second round, at full forward, against Port Adelaide. The following week, he was selected as 19th man against North Adelaide.
 
That proved to be his last League appearance for Norwood before moving back to his original club Jamestown in the middle of the season. Sawatzke represented Northern Areas during the year, and also played in a losing grand final.
 
He transferred back to Sturt early in 1934, and ended up playing 54 senior games for the Double Blues.
 
Sawatzke later played for West Adelaide, adding another five League games, as well as winning the B Grade (Reserves) Magarey Medal by one vote, in 1938.
