Allan John Joseph Smith, who was known as Jack, joined Norwood in 1939 after one year with West Torrens as captain-coach. Before moving to West Torrens, Jack Smith had played nine games with St Kilda from 1930 to 1931 and 62 games with North Melbourne from 1932 to 1937.

Injuries had restricted the centreman’s  appearances with West Torrens and his misfortune continued at Norwood as he played only four games during the year.

In December 1939 he was appointed as coach, replacing Alan Arthur for the 1940 season, but never assumed the role as he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in March. He was eventually replaced by Kevin Hardiman who had transferred from Essendon.

Jack Smith returned to coach Norwood-North in the wartime competition taking the team to premierships in 1943 and 1944. After the war he coached North Adelaide in 1945 and 1946.
