Robert Spencer played for Norwood in the 1939 junior colts grand final against West Torrens.
In 1940 he was named in the senior colts preliminary final side that played North Adelaide, and in the Grand Final team that defeated West Torrens : 7.1 to 6.6. The match was played on the Adelaide Oval, as a curtain-raiser to the League Grand Final.
The following season he played in the senior colts grand final loss to West Torrens.
After the conclusion of World War II and the resumption of normal competition, Spencer made his league debut in Round 16, 1945.
He was selected as a half forward flanker against West Adelaide. The match was played on the Kensington Oval and Norwood won by 55 points.
Spencer played in Norwood's last four games of the season, including the second semi-final versus Port Adelaide, and the preliminary final against West Torrens.
The Redlegs lost the second final by four points, however Spencer kicked two goals as a half forward and was named in the best players.
In mid-October he was in the Norwood squad that travelled to Broken Hill and beat a representative side.
He added another two senior games in 1946 but played mainly in the Reserves. Spencer also played for the Reserves in 1947.
